The Best Volunteers Are Inspired Volunteers

Where would we be without the thousands and thousands of volunteers? In such a fast paced world today there they are - the selfless givers, giving and giving more of themselves and doing it unconditionally day after day.

I think you'll agree there are many kinds of volunteers. The ones that join a group only to heighten their resume. Join a group to meet habitancy with no intention on doing much except socializing. Hey, tough talk .. Well maybe. But consequent me here.

If you've been a volunteer for any length of time you know how applicable the 80/20 rule is to volunteering. 80% of the work is always done by 20% of the people, sound familiar? I'll take that as a yes. The group I mentioned above, miss most meetings, contribute puny and sometimes just get in the way.

And by the way, I have translated this narrative into an audio message as well, the link is at the bottom.

So where am I going with all this, hang on, there surely is a great story in here.

There is surely only one true volunteer out there, and that's the inspired volunteer. They are the selfless givers, that give without any hope of receiving. The receiving is surely in the giving itself. Make sense? I hope so.

How do I know any of this? Good question and I'll tell you. I have been a life long volunteer myself, and have seen many volunteers come and go. It's the selfless and inspired that are the most genuine of volunteers, the lifers if you will!

Now an even more inspiring question! How do volunteers become inspired? Well, I can only tell you my personal story ... So let's start there:

Back in the Fall of 1987, I was just relaxing at home on a Sunday afternoon. In that quiet time, I was reflecting on my childhood, and more specifically, my years as a child at Christmas time. Boy was I lucky. No big presents mind you, but the spirit of it all. A young boy, with his wide eyed excitement of Santa and Christmas could barely be contained. You know that extra child like potential I'm talking about.

It wasn't about all the latest toys or gadgets, as Tv was barely a force in those days. It was the house being decorated, the smell of Christmas cooking, house and friends visiting. All the old fashioned things actually. Something wrapped under the tree with my name on it. Imagine, my name spelled out, right there! Wow! That was as good as it got for a puny 5 year old guy. The imagination was in over drive, like eating 5 chocolate bars!

Fast send to 1987 and the reality of how things had changed was obvious. Christmas was more about hype than what I grew up with. And kids today, well that was very separate too. So many singular parents with surely no funds to even entertain Christmas presents. Wow!!

This was the tragedy of tragedies in my opinion. No child of 5 years old should be thinkable, to understand there won't be a Christmas. And yet that's exactly what was happening. Children would plainly grow up too fast, too tough and likely, cold-hearted as well.

It gets better, so stay with me here okay.

It was in that Sunday afternoon reflection that I went from an attitude of gratitude, to being inspired. Inspired to surely do something that might make a inequity in the lives of these kids. So I moved from gratitude, to inspired, to intention. No mental involved, it was as if an power force had swept in and just took over.

At the time, I was managing a radio middle point in a small town. Without even blinking I took to the airwaves the next day, and stayed on the air for 75 hours straight. That in itself was insane! I shared my thoughts about how lucky I was as a child, how my mother, God rest her soul, could wrap up new underwear and call it a Christmas present. Hey, mom's could do that then. It was a wonderful moment in my radio career!

I shared my thoughts on how we can't just let these puny folks in our community go without a Christmas, it just can't be an acceptable thing was my thinking. We, as a community, surely needed to pitch in and help. Help make Christmas happen, for those kids who needed our help most. So I just kept talking and talking, boy did I do some talking!

After my 75 hours, we had raised ,000.00 and our first Christmas Wish was in the history books. We helped hundreds of kids and on Christmas Eve, I slept like a child myself, knowing the good thing we had all achieved with our sense of community. And knowing the next day, there would be children opportunity presents with their names on them. Yes, that was a magical Christmas for me!

The next year, habitancy everywhere asked "hey Mike are ya gonna stay on radio again and help the our kids" 75 hours straight!? You know, by the end of that marathon, I was delirious and surely had to be taken off the air, and taken home. But I wanted to do it again, maybe just use a separate format. So I broke it up over 3 days. 12 hours on air and go home for 12, do it again on day 2 and then wrap it up over 6 hours on day 3.

That format worked so well in fact, I hosted the Christmas Wish on radio, for an additional one 15 years. By the time I left radio in 2002, we were raising about ,000.00 a year! And I am proud to say, the radio middle point is still doing the Christmas Wish to this day.

Truth is, the Christmas Wish took on a life of it's own. And you know what, many of the puny guys and girls we helped so many years ago, themselves became donors and even volunteers. Could there be any bigger repaymen for this writer, I think not!

So in closing, let me just say this, the essence of the genuine volunteer is simple. They volunteer with a sense of purpose because they are inspired to make a difference. It starts knowingly or not, with a sense of gratitude and that leads to being inspired. It's that inspiration, once engaged, that becomes an intention, a purpose and a purpose that becomes it's own mission statement.

The Christmas Wish touched thousands and how many more will be touched by those that now have a sparkle in their eye when they reminisce about their Christmases past.

Don't underestimate what you can contribute, even as a singular volunteer.

There is no more noble a calling than that of "volunteer". I salute you all, as the world is a better place plainly because you're in it!
